The vessel had 243 people on board; at least six deaths have been confirmed, more than 100 survivors rescued, and 129 remain missing. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency Basarnas, the coast guard and navy have deployed extensive surface and air assets, including the naval vessel KRI Canopus for underwater searches.
Indonesian authorities report that the passenger vessel Virgo Transport 8, sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, lost radio contact and subsequently capsized in the Java Sea early Sunday amid rough seas and bad weather. The ship was carrying 243 people, including passengers, crew and cargo vehicles. By Monday, between 108 and 114 people had been rescued, while six fatalities were confirmed and 129 individuals were still unaccounted for. The incident occurred near the Masalembo waters, a notoriously challenging area for navigation, about 150 kilometres from the ship’s destination.
