On August 31, 2026 Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had signed a contract to construct two large container ships for an African customer, with a total value of KRW 444.5 billion, equivalent to roughly USD 322–323 million. Regulatory filings and business media report that the vessels are to be delivered by December 2028, with the agreement having been concluded in late August 2026. The name of the shipowner has not been disclosed, but it is identified as a shipping company based in Africa that is expanding its container fleet.
