The Baku International Sea Trade Port in Azerbaijan is implementing a plan to boost its annual container capacity from 100,000 TEU to 300,000 TEU by the end of 2027, while adding around 10 million tonnes of overall cargo capacity. The upgrades aim to strengthen Middle Corridor infrastructure linking Asia and Europe and attract additional transit volumes.
Rovshan Rustamov, chairman of Azerbaijan Railways, has announced that the Baku International Sea Trade Port intends to increase its annual container‑handling capacity to around 300,000 TEU by the end of 2027. The port was originally designed for roughly 100,000 TEU per year, but operational efficiencies have already lifted throughput to about 150,000 TEU, with plans to reach 200,000 TEU by the end of the current year. In parallel, the port’s overall cargo‑handling capacity, currently estimated at around 15 million tonnes, is set to be expanded by an additional 10 million tonnes through infrastructure investments and terminal development.
