On the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania, a private small vessel collided with a towboat, causing the smaller craft to capsize in darkness. Three people have been confirmed dead, one person remains missing, and another is in critical condition, as divers and swift-water rescue teams continue search operations along the river.
Regional news outlets report that the collision occurred around 9 p.m. local time on August 31, 2026, along the Monongahela River about one mile south of Min Love Park near Rices Landing, Pennsylvania. A private recreational vessel struck a towboat, and the smaller boat subsequently capsized, leaving several occupants in the water under challenging nighttime conditions. A man and a woman were rescued by the barge crew and airlifted to nearby hospitals; the woman was later pronounced dead, while the man remained in critical condition. Two additional bodies were recovered from the river on Tuesday, and at least one person from the private boat is still unaccounted for.
