Taiwan’s China Airlines raises cargo fuel surcharges, adding cost pressure to containerized supply chains

Taiwan’s leading cargo carrier China Airlines has announced a fresh increase in fuel surcharges on export air freight from Taiwan effective September 16. According to several Taiwanese business outlets, surcharges on long‑haul routes to Europe and North America will rise from TWD 58 to 62 per kilogram, and on short‑haul Asian routes from TWD 20 to 21 per kilogram. With base air freight rates already elevated, this further lifts end‑to‑end logistics costs for containerizable cargo moved in multimodal chains.

Several major Taiwanese business and financial news outlets report that China Airlines has notified freight forwarders of a second fuel surcharge hike this month on export cargo flights from Taiwan, to take effect on September 16. For long‑haul routes to Europe and North America, the surcharge will increase from TWD 58 to 62 per kilogram, a rise of about 6.9 %, while for short‑haul Asian services it will go from TWD 20 to 21 per kilogram, roughly a 5 % increase. These adjustments are explicitly linked to the sharp rise in aviation fuel costs driven by higher oil prices and renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East; local market analyses describe Brent crude and regional jet fuel benchmarks trading at multi‑month highs, feeding directly into airline cost structures.
