A serious fire broke out aboard a cargo ship undergoing repairs in the eastern Chinese port of Qingdao, leaving at least 25 people dead, according to Chinese state and international media. There were 42 people on board; 12 were safely evacuated and five injured were hospitalized in stable condition. In response, President Xi Jinping has called for intensified efforts to prevent major accidents and to carry out urgent search and rescue operations.
The eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao has been the scene of a major maritime‑related accident after a cargo ship in a repair dock caught fire. State and international reports indicate that 42 people were on board when the blaze broke out around 11:00 local time; the fire was extinguished by approximately 14:30. At least 25 people were killed, while 12 were evacuated safely and five injured victims were taken to hospital, where they remain in stable condition. Emergency services responded on site, and China’s Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a working group to help coordinate search, rescue and recovery efforts.
