The UK government has reversed plans to retire five maritime apprenticeship standards, including crew and marine operations qualifications, following representations from employers, unions and training providers.
The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that five maritime apprenticeship standards will be retained after plans to withdraw them were challenged by the industry. The affected programmes include small commercial vessel crewmember, near-coastal officer of the watch, marina and boatyard operative, marine pilot and seafarer deck-rating apprenticeships. The reversal was reported on October 15, 2026.
