The U.S.-flag heavy-lift cargo vessel SLNC York, carrying military equipment bound for Okinawa, suffered catastrophic engine room flooding about 955 miles south of Tokyo and was abandoned by its crew. All 18 mariners were later rescued without injury by the Hong Kong‑flag tanker Pacific Yantai in a U.S. Coast Guard–coordinated operation.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the heavy‑lift cargo ship SLNC York experienced severe flooding in its engine room while transiting the Western Pacific, roughly 955 miles south of Tokyo, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel. The ship, which was reportedly carrying military equipment destined for Okinawa, issued a distress call that prompted the deployment of the Hong Kong‑flag tanker Pacific Yantai to the area; the tanker arrived about 17 hours after the initial call and safely embarked all 18 crewmembers with no injuries reported. The flooding and subsequent loss of the vessel are now under investigation by the Coast Guard and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
