The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reported that a Canadian sailor has been successfully rescued after his yacht was discovered partially submerged in a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean, approximately 1,000 kilometres east-southeast of Christmas Island. According to Canadian Press coverage, the man had been travelling from Darwin, on Australia’s northern coast, to the Australian territory of Christmas Island when his catamaran encountered trouble and began taking on water. He was ultimately located in the vessel’s tender, a small boat used as a lifeboat, and was described as being in generally good health despite his ordeal at sea.
