European countries are delaying the implementation of the EU Entry‑Exit System (EES) while investing in upgraded port and terminal infrastructure to prevent travel and freight disruption. At least nine states, including France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, have postponed full biometric checks, and the UK has committed over £30 million to boost capacity at the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel and Eurostar terminals.

European governments are adjusting their border‑digitalization plans while simultaneously strengthening port and terminal infrastructure. According to pan‑European news coverage, at least nine EU countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, have effectively delayed the rollout of the Entry‑Exit System (EES) over fears of severe disruption at land and maritime borders. Brussels has informally allowed member states to defer full implementation beyond the expiry of the official grace period until the necessary IT systems and software are fully operational. Against this backdrop, the UK government has allocated more than £30 million to upgrade infrastructure and increase processing capacity at key departure points, notably the Port of Dover, the Eurotunnel terminal and Eurostar facilities. Additional reporting from European business and transport outlets has examined the broader implications of EES for transit and tourism flows, reinforcing the need for infrastructure upgrades alongside regulatory changes.
