Bangladesh has broken ground on the new Laldia Container Terminal at Chittagong Port, a state‑of‑the‑art facility to be developed and operated by APM Terminals under a public‑private partnership. The project, valued at about USD 550–600 million, will add roughly 600 m of quay, seven ship‑to‑shore cranes and a fleet of electric yard trucks, enabling the port to handle up to 900,000–1 million TEU annually by around 2030 and increasing national container capacity by about 30%. The government views the terminal as a cornerstone in its plan to turn Chittagong into a regional logistics hub and support its ambition to build a USD 1 trillion economy by 2034.
At Laldia Char on the banks of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, Bangladesh has held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Laldia Container Terminal, a new facility to be developed by Denmark‑based APM Terminals in partnership with the national government. The project, described by officials as the largest single investment in the country’s port sector to date, is estimated at roughly USD 550–600 million. The terminal will be built on about 49 acres and feature around 600 meters of quay equipped with seven ship‑to‑shore gantry cranes, some 30 remotely operated yard cranes and about 45 electric terminal trucks. Once fully operational around 2030, the facility is expected to handle close to 900,000–1 million TEU per year, adding approximately 800,000–900,000 TEU to Chittagong Port’s annual capacity and enabling direct calls by container vessels of up to 6,000 TEU with a draft of about 10.5 meters.
