The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index has adopted a revised methodology that lifts the weighting of 40-foot container rates to 55%. The change comes as European and Mediterranean freight rates rise while several US-bound lanes soften.
From 16.10.2026, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index began using revised route coverage and weightings. Rates for 40-foot containers now account for 55% of the composite index, up from 27.5%, with the largest changes affecting European and Mediterranean services. The weighting for the US west coast was reduced, while Southeast Asian routes gained greater influence.
