Construction of the Laldia container terminal at Chittagong Port is beginning on August 30, 2026, as Bangladesh’s first fully foreign‑funded container terminal project. Operated and developed by APM Terminals under a long‑term PPP, the $550 million facility will add around 800,000 TEU of annual capacity by 2030, strengthening Chittagong’s role as a major South Asian gateway.
Bangladesh is launching construction of the new Laldia container terminal at Chittagong Port, marking a milestone as the country’s first container facility to be developed entirely with foreign investment. Danish‑owned APM Terminals, part of the Maersk Group, is committing about $550 million under a public‑private partnership agreement with the Chittagong Port Authority, with the foundation stone ceremony scheduled for August 30, 2026. The project’s scope includes three years of construction followed by 30 years of commercial operations, targeting an annual handling capacity of around 800,000 TEU — nearly one quarter of the 3.5 million TEU processed by Chittagong in the 2025–26 fiscal year. Once operational, Laldia will become the port’s fifth dedicated container terminal, adding to existing NCT, CCT, GCB and PCT facilities.
